Will Smith Slaps Chris Rock after Chris cracked a joke about his wife.

The most talked-about moment of the 94th annual Academy Awards was when the best actor winner, Will Smith, took offense to a joke by presenter Chris Rock and slapped him onstage.

The drama began when Rock screened the best documentary at the 2022 ceremony. Rock joked that Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, was ready for GI Jane 2. (Pinkett Smith is open about alopecia that causes hair loss.)

As Smith went back to his seat, Rock marveled, “Wow, wow … Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me.” Rock said “Wow dude, it was a G.I. Jane joke,” which prompted Smith to repeat his demand. shouting “keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth” twice.

Looking shaken, Rock paused for a moment and then told the crowd: “ That was a  — Greatest night in the history of television” and then continued along with his presenter moment.

During the next commercial break, Smith was pulled aside and comforted by Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry, who told him to brush it off. Smith appeared to wipe tears from his eyes as he sat back down with Pinketh Jada Smith.

The next presenter, Sean Combs, said of this wonderful moment: “I didn’t know that this year would be the most exciting Oscar ever. Well, Will and Chris, we’re going to organize this like a family at a gold party. But for now, let’s move on with love. Let’s make a noise, everyone! ”

Following the controversy, Smith  won the  King Richard Leading Actor Award-his first Oscar award-and went back on stage. The confrontation with Smith Rock initially questioned many whether it was some kind of mischief or stunt, but when Will Smith took his moment to apologize for his actions, the suspicion was softened.

“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” Smith said. “At this moment in my life, at this moment, I am overwhelmed by the fact that God wants me to  be in this world. In this movie, the strongest and most I have ever encountered. I had to protect  one of the kind people, Aunjanue Ellis. I had to protect  the two actresses Sanya and Demi, who play Venus and Serena. I am called to love people in my life. And to protect people and become my people’s flow.

Wiping away the tears, Smith continued. “In order to do what we do, we must be able to be abused. You must be able to get people hooked on you. In this business, people are You need to be able to look down on you and you need to act like you’re okay with a smile. Denzel told me a few minutes ago: “Be careful, at your best moment, The devil will come to you. “” I want to be a vessel of love. I want to say.

He continued, “I want to apologize to academy, I want to excuse myself with my colleague. This is a beautiful moment, and I will not cry to earn a award. That is my It is not awarded for awards. It looks like all  people and  King Richard and Venes and the whole of Serena and  Williams Family. Art mimics life, me Richard Williams looks like a crazy father as you! But love will make you get crazy. ”

Reactions online, of course, ranged from delighted memes to concern. Some supported Smith, including the actor’s 23-year-old son Jaden Smith, who wrote on Twitter minutes after the ceremony: “And That’s How We Do It.”

Representative Ayanna Pressley, who has also been open about stigma faced with alopecia, tweeted and deleted a defense of Smith. “#Alopecia nation stand up! Thank you #WillSmith Shout out to all the husbands who defend their wives living with alopecia in the face of daily ignorance & insults,” the deleted tweet read.
